Welcome to the GHIN Blog.  This site is intended to provide the opportunity for GHIN Users’ to participate and keep active with GHIN Development Initiatives and other GHIN Announcements. Informal posts will be published frequently and will serve as the main communication channel between GHIN and State and Regional Golf Associations.

In addition to blog posts, site will link to our “idea” creation and feedback solution provided by User Voice.  The User Voice site will allow users to submit ideas, vote on ideas and make comments to ideas already submitted.  This new service will be named “Your in-GHIN-ious Ideas“.  This will allow GHIN and appropriate steering committees or focus groups to analyze data when establishing priorities.

GHIN Mobile APP – Issues with iPhone 7 / iPhone 7 Plus

GHIN Support has received reports regarding users not being able to open the GHIN Mobile App on their new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus devices.

After testing and research we have concluded that these reports were directly related to the cellular connectivity bug iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus users (using Verizon) were reporting to Apple.  Apple released a software update (iOS 10.0.3) on October 17th to fix these issues.

We have only received a few reports of this issue occurring, so we are hopeful that the Apple update has resolved the issue for our GHIN Mobile App users.

GHIN Service Maintenance Tuesday, October 25, 2016

The USGA will be performing routine maintenance on Tuesday, October 25 between 10-11 pm ET.  All GHIN services, including GHP transmissions, GHP Online and GHIN website score posting and handicap lookup will be unavailable during this time.  TPP Online registration will also be down, but TPP Online Administration and Scoring will be fully functional during this maintenance period.

2016 GHIN Users’ Meeting Registration and Information

The 33rd GHIN Users’ Meeting will be held Thursday and Friday, November 10-11, 2016 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort in Florida.

Thursday morning will offer two general sessions focusing on USGA related material including an overview of the Course Rating Application and an update on the World Handicap System. The afternoon will center on the USGA Product Roadmap with an introduction to the USGA Tournament Management Program (USGA TMP), Powered by Golf Genius Software.

We strongly encourage at least one staff member from each SRGA attend. Access to the USGA TMP will be predicated on the SRGAs participation in training classes.

Meeting Registration: We ask that each person attending, please complete the registration form no later than Friday, October 21, 2016. We encourage you to review the session descriptions to help determine your attendance. A lab room will be available for your use throughout the conference including a printer.

USGA Collaborates with Golf Genius Software

We are pleased to announce the collaboration with Golf Genius to offer tournament management software to your association and your member clubs in 2017.  Through the FAQ’s below you will learn what will be available, when it will be available to the SRGA and the high level plan to introduce your clubs to the software. A select group of SRGAs will be participating in a Pilot phase through October to aide in preparation for the official launch.

Along with contacting their current customers, Golf Genius will be posting the same FAQs on their website. Should any current Golf Genius customers who are also your SRGA member clubs have questions, they will be directed to you for information. Please feel free to use any of the language below if you would like to share this initial announcement with your membership.

Additional detailed information will be provided as we complete the Pilot phase and prepare for the November conference where extensive training and launch plans will be offered.

The USGA and Golf Genius Software have entered into a collaboration agreement whereby GGS will provide golf tournament management software to GHIN SRGAs and their member clubs. Beginning in early 2017, two distinct Tournament Management software products will be offered to GHIN customers as a replacement for the current Tournament Pairing Program (TPP®):


  • USGA Tournament Management, Powered by Golf Genius Software, will provide a feature set equivalent to TPP® plus additional capabilities including robust support for golf leagues
  • USGA Tournament Management PREMIUM, Powered by Golf Genius Software, will offer an upgraded set of tournament management features and capabilities


Why did the USGA enter into an agreement with Golf Genius Software?

The USGA’s GHIN service has been an important technology tool for SRGAs, clubs, and golfers since it was developed in 1981. One of the core products included with GHIN is the Tournament Pairing Program (commonly called TPP®). In recent months the USGA began to reimagine GHIN and explore opportunities to enhance its impact for the future. During this process the USGA decided to outsource the tournament management component to a software firm dedicated to the tournament management software market. The USGA selected Golf Genius Software because of the proven quality of the product, its acceptance among numerous clubs, the scalability of the Golf Genius cloud solution, and the Golf Genius commitment to providing outstanding service to the USGA and its GHIN customers.

What are the products that will be offered through this collaboration?

The USGA will offer two new products to its GHIN customers through this collaboration.  Both products are derivatives of the Golf Genius product that is already in use around the world.

  • USGA Tournament Management, Powered by Golf Genius Software, will be functionally equivalent to TPP® and will be offered exclusively by the USGA and SRGAs to their GHIN club customers through their GHIN service agreements. The price for this product will be included in the overall GHIN pricing structure.
  • USGA Tournament Management PREMIUM, Powered by Golf Genius Software, will be functionally equivalent to the Golf Genius product, will be available to all GHIN SRGAs for the conduct of association events, and will be an optional upgrade available to GHIN clubs for an additional annual upgrade fee. Clubs who elect to purchase the upgrade will enter into subscription agreements directly with Golf Genius and will benefit from reduced price for the PREMIUM product.

What are the differences between USGA Tournament Management and USGA Tournament Management PREMIUM?

USGA Tournament Management, Powered by Golf Genius Software, provides all the tools needed by the golf shop at a private club or public facility to set up and run member events, leagues and outings. It substantially reduces the workload in the golf shop and provides best-in-class printed materials including fully customizable scorecards, cart signs, bag tags, locker labels, tee sheets, alpha lists, etc.

USGA Tournament Management PREMIUM, Powered by Golf Genius Software, delivers all the benefits outlined above plus capabilities to improve the golfer experience via the GGS mobile app, live scoring, live TV leaderboards, online registration and payments, and a customizable website for each event, league or outing.

When will USGA Tournament Management products be available to GHIN customers?

The products offered through this collaboration will be available to GHIN customers in early 2017 as part of their GHIN service agreements. The USGA will work with its GHIN customers over the next several months to define a detailed rollout schedule and training process.  More specifically:

  • In early August the GHIN team will work with GGS in a Pilot Phase in which a small set of SRGAs and their member Clubs will be trained, utilize the products, and provide structured feedback to ensure the products and processes are ready for a large scale rollout.
  • In November, the products will be launched to GHIN SRGAs at the annual GHIN User Conference (Nov 10-12).  This will provide a robust training environment for SRGAs to prepare for releasing the products to their member clubs.
  • In January, a rollout plan will be implemented where SRGAs will begin activating their member clubs, taking into consideration the geographic region (local golf season), the number of clubs in the SRGA, and the pace at which the SRGA is able to smoothly roll out the new products.

Who are the SRGAs participating in the Pilot?

The following SRGAs will be participating in the Pilot from August to October to help assess the features of the USGA Tournament Management products and provide feedback on the training and support materials:

  • Florida State Golf Association
  • Massachusetts Golf Association
  • Minnesota Golf Association
  • Nebraska Golf Association
  • Oregon Golf Association
  • Texas Golf Association

How will the existing Golf Genius customers be impacted? Who will continue to buy Golf Genius products directly?

Existing Golf Genius customers that are GHIN clubs will benefit from the USGA pricing structure, and will switch from the Golf Genius product to USGA Tournament Management PREMIUM, Powered by Golf Genius Software when their subscriptions renew. Golf Genius customers that are not GHIN clubs will continue to subscribe to the standard Golf Genius product.

Golf Genius will also continue to address consumer markets, providing the Golf Genius product to individuals managing golf leagues and organizing golf trips.

Does Golf Genius provide its products outside of the United States?

Golf Genius is in use all over the world. Some countries outside the U.S. utilize GHIN services, and customers in those countries will be eligible to use USGA Tournament Management and USGA Tournament Management PREMIUM.  Golf Genius will continue to operate in other countries as it does today.

Will GHIN customers still be able to use TPP®?

To provide ample time to complete the rollout across all GHIN SRGAs and GHIN clubs, TPP® will continue to be operational and supported via the standard GHIN support process through Dec 31, 2017.

Who will provide product support for USGA Tournament Management and USGA Tournament Management PREMIUM?

As they do today with TPP®, SRGAs will provide Level 1 support (live chat and phone support) to their member clubs.  This support is an integral part of the value proposition provided by the SRGAs to member clubs.  Golf Genius will provide Level 2 support (escalation and further assistance) to SRGAs to support member clubs and direct support to the USGA and SRGAs related to the use of USGA Tournament Management PREMIUM.

With comprehensive online help (knowledge base, tutorials, videos, etc.) and a robust online user community, users can usually quickly find the information and answers they need.

For all other GHIN products, SRGAs will provide Level 1 support for their member clubs and the USGA GHIN support team will provide Level 2 support, as they do today.

Can GHIN SRGAs and clubs use a different tournament management solution?

Under the collaboration agreement, GHIN SRGAs and clubs will be entitled to use the Golf Genius powered products as part of their existing relationship with the USGA.  GHIN SRGAs and clubs can choose other tournament management solutions at their own cost – just as is the case today with TPP®.

USGA Welcomes Paul Maya, Head of Products

Dear State and Regional Golf Associations,

As we continue the journey of enhancing our member engagement and the elements that comprise that model, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Maya as head of products for the USGA.  Paul joined us on Tuesday, July 5.

In this newly created role, Paul will lead our efforts to create the strategic vision, business model, support and service infrastructure and product specifications for the modern multi-purpose golf technology products that will initially replace GHIN, and will ultimately expand the scope of our service to golfers and facilities. The evolution of member engagement is inclusive of developing State and Regional Golf Association partnerships, evolving handicap administration and course rating technology, using data and analytics to drive decisions and modernizing our product offerings to golfers and facilities.

Paul has 15+ years’ experience as a product manager for consumer technology products and has led both business and technology teams in creating highly expansible digital products at several well-known companies. He was most recently the global head of consumer products & general manager of Bloomberg Digital, and previously held the role of vice president of technology at CNN and ABC Digital. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Carnegie Mellon, as well as Masters of Business Administration and master’s degree in quantitative methods from Columbia University.

In his role, Paul will report directly to Sarah Hirshland and oversee GHIN association services for both legacy products and future offerings. Fran Nee, Joe Cavallo and the GHIN business operations team will report to Paul and continue to work in close partnership with IT, Members and Regional Affairs as we continue to transform the member engagement model.

I would like to thank Emily von Doehren, who has so ably led the GHIN business operations team for the past eight months. She will continue to be a critical partner for Paul and the team as we elevate and modernize our partnerships with the SRGA community.

Windows 10 Update & Reminders

Microsoft has recently changed the Windows 10 upgrade notification on a Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 computer from “optional” to “recommended”. This means if the computer is set to “install all recommended updates”, that system will automatically download the upgrade to the computer. However, the installation of the Windows 10 upgrade will not automatically take place; the user must give permission to install. This can become annoying to the user because they will continually be asked to install this update.


Here are a few reminders from our original blog post with regard to Windows 10 and GHIN applications.


Windows 10 Upgrade from Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 (assuming GHP and/or TPP client is already installed on the computer)

  • After the upgrade to Windows 10 both GHP and TPP Client open and work as expected.
  • The SQL Manager does not load any longer and an error is generated after the PC restarts (c:\windows\system32\sqlunirl.dll) because the SQL Manager is written to the Startup folder. If you don’t want the error to display, you can remove it from the Startup folder.
  • There is not a way to identify the port number on SQL.
  • The upgraded Windows 10 computer can run as the work station or the server.
  • Handicap Allocation Utility – The utility installs and works however there is some strangeness downloading the file from GHP Online (using the new Edge Browser, Firefox, IE 11, Google). But it does work.
  • The latest versions of Firefox and Google Chrome browsers can successfully be installed.
  • If the user has a Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 and want to upgrade to 10 make sure they install TPP or GHP client BEFORE they upgrade.


Windows 10 Computer (including upgrades)

  • GHP and TPP Client programs CANNOT be installed on a new Windows 10 computer.
  • GHP and TPP Client programs CANNOT be freshly installed on an upgraded Windows 10 computer.
  • For golf associations ONLY: It is possible to install TPP Client and point the data path to your online TPP instance to access the database.
  • Handicap Allocation Utility: The utility installs and works however there is some strangeness downloading the file from GHP Online (using the new Edge Browser, Firefox, IE, Google work fine). But it does work.
  • The latest versions of Firefox and Google Chrome browsers can successfully be installed.


GHP Golfer

  • If the computer is upgraded to Windows 10 or if this is a new computer running Windows 10, Edge is automatically the default web browser.
  • You will want to change the default browser to Firefox when running GHP Golfer.

UPDATE 5/26/16: TPP Association Points Widgets and Reports

The report and widget generation tools in all TPP Association sites have been fixed and are now operating as expected. At your convenience, please log into your TPP Points site and verify the information and check your website to verify the widget is displaying properly.

If you did not remove the widgets from your website there is nothing further that needs to be done. If you removed the widgets while the error was occurring, you will need to rebuild the widgets for your website.

Mobile App – Scoring Filters Released

GHIN has reactivated the two scoring filters: “Scores – Past 12 Months” and “Scores – 2016” which can be found by selecting Stats on the home page of the mobile app and choosing the desired filter.

The USGA will continue to monitor all processes to ensure the integrity of the core GHIN system. If we find and confirm that the mobile app is impacting core GHIN functionality, the first remediation will be to turn these two scoring filters off. This action would NOT have any impact on any other mobile app functionality.

We ask that you not promote the release of the filters to your membership until early next week so that we may carefully monitor GHIN this weekend.

The release of the scoring filters does not require any type of update or download of the mobile app. The normal refresh of data will include the scoring filters.

TPP Association Points Widget and Reports

The reports and widget generation tools in your TPP Association sites are currently not functioning properly. The team is aware of the issue and working towards a resolution.

If you are currently using the widget on your website the user will see a server error. We would ask your assistance in disabling the widgets from your individual websites (i.e., comment out the code, remove the link) while this is being worked on.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will report back when this has been resolved.

GHP Golfer and Dymo Labels

With the most recent update to the Firefox browser, version 46.0.1, released on May 3, 2016 it appears the paper size selection of the label gets reset to the default. When this happens the Dymo label will print out a blank label.

In order to print the handicap label properly, the GHPOnlineGolferLabel will need to be reselected as the paper size. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Go to Devices and Printers in the Control Panel
  • Find the Dymo Label Writer Printer and right click on it
  • Click on Printer Properties>Advanced (tab at top)>Printing Defaults (bottom left)>Advanced
  • Set Paper Size to GHPOnlineGolferLabel and click Ok
  • Go back to the Dymo Label Writer Printer and right click on it
  • Click on Printing Preferences>Advanced
  • Set Paper Size to GHPOnlineGolferLabel and click Ok

Please click HERE for a visual guide to make these changes.

Note: If you have suppressed the print dialogue box you MUST release that first before doing the steps above. After resetting the paper size selection you can then suppress the dialogue box again.
